Shengongxi Information

Cantonese Shengongxi (“operas for the gods”) are a traditional form of opera performed in thanksgiving to the deities. The term refers to Cantonese opera staged in temporary bamboo theatres by invited troupes on religious occasions such as deity birthdays, temple consecrations, the Hungry Ghost Festival (Yu Lan Ghost Festival) and the Tai Ping Ching Chiu festival. The performances are put on primarily for the gods to watch, while also entertaining local residents.
