"The Eighteen Cantonese Opera Scripts" refers to the 18 most popular Cantonese opera scripts during the Qianlong period. "The Seven Sages" is ranked seventh in order. It was originally an outline play without a complete script. It only lists the plot, roles, actor names and musical highlights of each scene in the play, emphasizing the free expression of the actors. This performance was rewritten according to the outline by Sun Kim-Long, a famous Cantonese opera actor who performed this play in the 1970s and 1980s, and added traditional stage scenes performed in "Mandarin" to bring a more complete performance to the audience.
The content tells the story of Liu Quanyi's mother, Yao, who hired a murderer to kill Liu Quan Ding, who was not her own son, in order to let her biological son inherit the family property. Quan Ding was rescued by his righteous servant and continued to go to Beijing to take the exam. His wife, Wang, was falsely accused by Quanyi's mother of killing Quanyi and she was beaten. Quan Ding's son avenged his mother and was exiled to the border. He met his father who was the top scorer in high school and finally reunited his family.
