Conservation & Transmission

The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong is the organisation representing the Cantonese opera profession. Its members are professional representatives of the various departments of the industry, such as actors, musicians, martial artists and the costume trunk and scenic painting departments. In the past, membership criteria were rather strict: applicants had to make their living from Cantonese opera, have a certain standing in the industry, and be considered in light of their teacher lineage; only after approval by the Board of Directors could they formally become members, and all members were bound by the Association's rules and discipline. Actors who wished to perform overseas also needed the Association's seal as a guarantee. As society has developed, the Association has gradually relaxed its restrictions on members, but the Association's own value, and even its influence on society, has continued to grow. The Government and all sectors of society recognise the Association as the organisation representing the Cantonese opera profession. It is therefore the Association's bounden duty to conserve and transmit the art of Cantonese opera.
Developing the Market
Since Cantonese opera was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, public attention to Cantonese opera has grown steadily, and the Association has made considerable efforts to broaden its audience. For example, it secured Yau Ma Tei Theatre as a training venue for emerging performers to stage the Cantonese Opera Young Talent Performance Series, with around 100 regular performances every year, which naturally attracts many new audiences. In collaboration with various partners, it also organises all kinds of performances and promotional activities, such as working with the Hong Kong Professional Photographers' Network to exhibit production stills of emerging performers at the airport passenger terminal, and arranging excerpt performances that visitors can watch for free. The Cantonese opera exhibition and excerpt performances at Times Square in Causeway Bay in early 2017 also drew large audiences and attention to the question of how Cantonese opera is being transmitted in Hong Kong. Special tourist performances (Cantonese opera experience sessions) and student performances at Yau Ma Tei Theatre also help promote the art to audiences from different sectors. Besides performances, the Association promotes the art through education: in recent years it has run regular Cantonese opera courses with Po Leung Kuk primary and secondary schools and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Lui Yun Choy Memorial College, giving children contact with Cantonese opera from an early age. It has also launched credit-bearing courses with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The Education University of Hong Kong. The Association continues to strive, with the help of the Education Bureau, to raise the academic standing of Cantonese opera so that the public may better understand and appreciate its artistic value. In recent years it has also sponsored the Cantonese opera singing section of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, raising students' interest and enthusiasm in singing through competition, which has also been of considerable help in promoting Cantonese opera.

Large-scale Cantonese Opera Promotional Exhibitions and Performances

The Association has collaborated three times with the Hong Kong International Airport to present the “Double Exhibition of Two Bamboo Theatres”, “The Immortals' Birthday Party” and “When Young Talent Meets the Classics: The More You Watch, the More Fun”.
